The Theory Test
The Theory Test

Multiple Choice Questions
As from the 3rd September 2007, the theory test will change increasing the number of multiple choice questions from 35 to 50.
The time allowed to complete the test will increase from 40 to 57 minutes and the pass mark will increase from 30 to 43
This increase is designed to develop higher driving standards and maximise the test's potential for road safety and other benefits.
The fee will increase from £21.50 to £28.50.
There are two parts to the theory test: the multiple choice question and the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).
Hazard Perception Test
The HPT has 14 video clips. Each contains one hazard and one clip has two hazards.
Each clip is scored using a timed window starting at five when a potential hazard starts to develop working progressively down to zero as you reach the hazard.
Tips for passing your theory test
- Take your time
- Flag questions you are unsure of so that you can review them later.
- If you are struggling then eliminate the answers you know are wrong before you guess.
- When you check through your answers only change your first answer if you are 100% sure you were wrong. (Most of the time your first choice will be correct)
- On the HPT when you see anything that could develop into a hazard click pause then click again. (This way if you have clicked before the scoring window opens you will score with you second click)
- DO NOT continuously click or double click without a pause as this could be seen as an attempt to cheat and you will not score for that clip.
